Entertainment/The 1970's
Mr. Lear is the creator and writer behind such ground-breaking television shows as All In The Family, Good Times, Sanford & Son, One Day At A Time and Maude. At a time when the leading storylines on television shows involved what to do when the boss came to dinner unexpectedly, Mr. Lear's shows portrayed the significant issues of the day—racial segregation, ethnic prejudice, and political polarization, among others -- and created a dialogue around them. Mr. Lear is the owner of a “Dunlap broadside,” one of the first printed copies of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Not wanting it to be a mere collector's item, he took the priceless document on a tour of the United States so that Americans could experience the country's "birth certificate" firsthand.
